Leaving fundamentalism is a life-altering choice that can generate guilt, shame and confusion. Authoritarian, fear-based teachings make a deep impression on our psyches, especially when we are taught these beliefs from childhood.
Entertaining new ideas, or questioning old ones is often considered sinful, a sign of ‘spiritual weakness,’ leaving doubters to wonder if they are somehow ‘flawed.’ On the contrary—it is brave to question long-held beliefs that once gave you comfort. You are not crazy or selfish; it is the belief system that is lacking if it no longer satisfies your spiritual needs. Maybe it never did.
Leaving can have a devastating impact on our closest relationships, as many fundamentalist groups demand that dissenters be excommunicated and shunned, which can foster overwhelming feelings of betrayal, loss, grief and anger.
It is a profound and sacred process to reconcile these afflictive emotions with the waves of joy, relief and liberation that come with breaking free.
